This is GM Comptech's superb Yamaha R1. When Performance Bikes tested this bike they described it as "The Fastest R1 on the Planet". It was prepared by Graves Motorsports of Van Nuys, California as part of the official Yamaha Factory Racing / Graves Motorsports entry for the 2003 AMA Formula Xtreme series. 10 rounds of the Lockhart-Phillips USA Formula Xtreme series were held, one at each of the U.S. Superbike Championship meetings with the exception of the first Superbike round at Daytona which did not feature a Formula Xtreme race.
Three Yamaha team riders; Jamie Hacking (No. 2), Damon Buckmaster (No. 6) and Aaron Gobert (No. 96) contested the Formula Xtreme series aboard the R1s. These three riders also rode the Team Yamaha R6s in the Supersport championship along with a fourth rider, Jason DiSalvo, who rode only the R6.
This bike was Jamie Hacking's A-bike supported through the season by mechanic James Siddall. Jamie's efforts were concentrated on the AMA 600 Supersport championship, which he won, but Jamie still finished 6th overall in the Formula Xtreme series taking two wins at Road Atlanta and Barber Motorsports Park. Damon Buckmaster, riding an identical R1, finished 2nd overall in the Formula Xtreme series. Damon also took two race wins and led the series for several rounds until a stop-and-go penalty at Laguna Seca dropped him out of the lead. Aaron Gobert was forced to withdraw from the series. After breaking his wrist at Elkhart Lake he found the awesome R1 FX too demanding and opted to concentrate on his Supersport ride.
The performance of these bikes is demonstrated by comparing lap times with the Superbike lap times at the same meetings. At some tracks the Formula Xtreme machines set faster lap times while at others the times matched the fastest Superbike laps.

With rule changes for the 2004 Season the capacity limit was reduced and 1000cc fours were no longer eligible in Formula Xtreme. Yamaha Factory Racing/Graves Motorsports chose to field a team riding the new R1 in the 2004 Superstock championship while the Formula Xtreme R1s became available for sale. GM Comptech was lucky enough to buy one of these awesome bikes to be shipped to UK for racing, product demonstration and possibly the ultimate track-day bike.
